After an overtime goal from Alec Martinez, the los Angeles Kings advanced to the Stanley Cup Final, in a truly royal fashion. They made history as the only NHL team to play all three Game 7’s and live to advance to the Stanley Cup Final. Also, Justin Williams now holds the NHL record for most points (14) in Game 7’s.
The game reached a 3.17 overnight rating, it became the most-watched NHL game ever broadcast on OLN, Versus or NBCSN.
Here are some quotes from the player after the win:
Dustin Brown, on how the team has come together in recent years:
“I think, one, we have a group of guys who have been together. The first time we did it, we made it very easy on ourselves. This time, we’ve made it really hard on ourselves. We need to enjoy this one on the plane ride. This is probably the most emotional series I’ve been a part of, but it’s four more games we need to win.”
Alec Martinez, on what went through his mind when he saw the puck go in:
“I didn’t know it went in until I saw Stolly going bananas there. He was getting pretty excited. That’s when I just started celebrating, too. I didn’t really see it go in. I know it went off a couple bodies. I just tried to get it through and fortunately it went in.”
Tyler Toffoli, on looking ahead to the New York Rangers:
“I’m pretty excited. It’s my first chance to win a Stanley Cup, play in the Stanley Cup Finals. The guys in the room are excited. We just want to get it going.”
Justin Williams, Mr. Game 7, on maintaining his Game 7 performance:
“Really wouldn’t have meant anything if we didn’t come out with a victory. The story is how we were able to come back and how resilient we were, how awesome this series was to play and be a part of. It was just fitting. It ended in Game 7 in an overtime.”
Williams, on what it would say about the Kings if they were to win another Stanley Cup:
“Well, I think within the past few years, we’ve tried to earn the respect of the league. L.A. is not just a place to come and play a hockey game and work on your tan. It’s a tough loop in California right now to play. We want to put L.A. on the map, and put it significantly on the map with regards to hockey. We can obviously do that with the win tonight. Moving forward, looking at the Rangers, try to get that done as well.”
Head Coach Darryl Sutter, on whether this was the most emotional series he’d ever been a part of:
“I don’t really get hooked into my own emotion during the game. I get hooked into the players’. That’s what my job is. Not to yell, scream, holler, all that stuff.”
Sutter, on what makes this a “special group”:
“Well, we’re going to try and beat New York, then we’ll be really special.”
Sutter, on how the team matches up with the New York Rangers:
“I’ll deal with that tomorrow.”
